Qualifying sites for the 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at Newport (R.I.) Country Club, from June 27-30, have been announced by the USGA. Newport, one of the five founding clubs of the USGA, is hosting its first Senior Open and fifth USGA championship.
Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 33 sites across the United States between May 13 and June 5. Online entry applications are available now and the registration process will continue through Wednesday, May 1, at 5 p.m. EDT (champ-admin.usga.org).
“The USGA is excited to bring senior golf’s most prestigious championship to Rhode Island for the first time and to Newport Country Club where the Association hosted its inaugural championship in 1895,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Allied Golf Associations will be instrumental in conducting the qualifying process, which represents many of the USGA’s core values. Thousands of eligible senior golfers will have the opportunity to earn a place in the field and compete for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the champion.”
Those players who are exempt from qualifying and have already filed entries include 2023 champion Bernhard Langer, who won with a 72-hole score of 7-under-par 277 at SentryWorld, in Stevens Point, Wis. U.S. Senior Open champions Fred Funk (2009), Colin Montgomerie (2014), Kenny Perry (2013, 2017), Gene Sauers (2016), David Toms (2018) and Padraig Harrington (2022) have also entered, along with U.S. Open champions Retief Goosen (2001, 2004) and Michael Campbell (2005).
One of the U.S. Senior Open qualifiers will be held at The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course, in Hot Springs, Va. The club will host qualifying for the 10th consecutive time and 20th overall. It has been the site of eight USGA championships, including the 1967 U.S. Women’s Open and 1988 U.S. Amateur. Sam Snead, a four-time U.S. Open runner-up and World Golf Hall of Famer, was The Homestead’s golf professional for nearly six decades.
Worthington Hills Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio, and Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, in Montgomery, Ala., will each host qualifying for the 10th time. Dave Cunningham was medalist with a 67 at Worthington Hills last year. He would tie for 27th in last year’s U.S. Senior Open.
For the ninth time since 1991, Florence (S.C.), Country Club, is a Senior Open qualifying host. Goose Creek Golf Club, in Jurupa Valley, Calif., and Indiana (Pa.) Country Club will be qualifying sites for the eighth and seventh times, respectively.
California has the most qualifying sites with five. Four U.S. Senior Open qualifiers are scheduled in Florida, while Texas will host three qualifiers. There are qualifying sites in 22 states. Franklin (Mass.) Country Club, located 60 miles north of Newport, will host a U.S. Senior Open qualifier on Tuesday, May 21. The Broadmoor, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will conclude qualifying on Wednesday, June 5. The club’s East Course is the site of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open.
Don Pooley (2002) is the lone player to win the U.S. Senior Open after advancing through qualifying. In 2023, 18 golfers who played in a qualifier made the 36-hole cut at SentryWorld.
The 2024 U.S. Senior Open will be the 10th USGA championship contested in Rhode Island. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4 or be a professional, and be 50 years of age at the start of championship proper.
Four U.S. Senior Opens have been held in New England, including 2017 when the championship was played at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass. Kenny Perry posted a two-stroke victory over Kirk Triplett to claim his second Senior Open title.
